Discover 5 practical ways to use Moulin Roty muslin squares, from gentle swaddling to creative play. Perfect for new parents looking for versatile baby essentials.
Quick answer
Moulin Roty muslin squares are incredibly versatile — use them for swaddling, as burp cloths, nursing covers, lightweight blankets, and creative toddler play scarves.
Why muslin squares make sense for everyday parenting
Muslin squares are a staple in many nurseries because they are soft, breathable, and multi-purpose. The 100% organic cotton fabric from Moulin Roty's Après la Pluie collection is gentle on sensitive skin and easy to wash, making it a practical choice for both babies and toddlers.
Unlike single-use products, a set of three squares can replace several items in your diaper bag. Their lightweight nature means they pack flat without adding bulk, yet they provide enough coverage for quick naps or nursing privacy.
Understanding a few key uses helps you get the most out of each square and avoid buying duplicates.
Limitations to keep in mind
These muslin squares measure approximately 70 x 70 cm. While great for small babies, they may not be large enough for older toddlers as a full swaddle or blanket. For bigger kids, consider using two squares together or reserving them for smaller tasks.
Because they are lightweight, they are not ideal for cold weather or outdoor use as a primary blanket. Layer them over a heavier swaddle or use indoors during warmer months.
5 ways to use your Moulin Roty muslin squares
- 1. Swaddling newborn: Lay the square flat in a diamond shape, fold the top corner down, place baby with shoulders at the fold, and wrap first one side then the bottom and the other side snugly. Avoid overwrapping — leave room for hip movement. Stop swaddling once baby shows signs of rolling over, as loose fabric can become a suffocation risk.
- 2. Burp cloth or spit-up barrier: Drape the muslin over your shoulder or across your lap while feeding. Its absorbent organic cotton catches dribbles and protects your clothes. Machine wash warm and tumble dry low — avoid fabric softener to maintain absorbency. Always have a spare ready because babies often spit up right after a burp.
- 3. Nursing cover: Fold the square diagonally, place the long edge across your chest, and tuck one corner into a bra strap or behind your neck for a quick cover-up. The lightweight fabric lets airflow circulate while providing privacy. Test the coverage at home first — some babies dislike feeling enclosed, so leave one side slightly open for peeking.
- 4. Lightweight blanket for stroller or car seat: Spread the square loosely over a baby in a stroller or car seat for a soft layer on warm days. It blocks sun without overheating. Do not use as a tight blanket or tie it in place — loose draping prevents entanglement. Never attach a muslin square to a car seat handle or canopy; dangling fabric can pose a strangulation hazard.
- 5. Toddler play scarf or peek-a-boo prop: Hand the square to your toddler for creative play: tie two corners together to make a simple scarf for dress-up, or use it as a parachute for stuffed animals. The fun prints encourage imagination without needing batteries or screens. Supervise playtime — children may try to wrap the square around their neck, which can tighten accidentally. Knots should be loose and easy to undo.
